"Bacon is a condiment"
“Bacon is a condiment...”
During my photo shoots in Germany over the last year, I often found it necessary to rush through a meal. Now I really hate doing this, as I feel that part of the European/German experience is best done through their cuisine. I think this philosophy especially holds truth when traveling through Germany and, of course, Italy. So I hate going to "fast food" restaurants when in Europe.
Well as chance were to have it, I found myself in one of those situations in Germany that forced me to eat at a "fast food" restuarant. I had arrived at the Nürburgring on time, but due to a number of factors, I wasn't able to secure my credentials upon my arrival. After a couple hours of walking back and forth between various media and administration offices I finally got things sorted out. But I hadn't eaten all day..and had but an hour or 2 at most to photograph.
So there it was, a U.S. based franchise Sandwich shop just to the left of the Nürburgring welcome center and I had about 10 minutes to eat, so, a sub sandwich it was. I went in and ordered my usual, a BLT. Of course us silly Americans all know what a BLT is - "Bacon, Lettuce, and Tomato". When I ordered in German, the staff just stared at me. I tried English. And they continued to just stare.
So when the manager approached the counter, I explained I what I wanted on the sub sandwich....and in perfect English he asked "..and what kind of meat would you like on your sub?" "Bacon please". And again he answered in perfect English "Here in Germany, bacon is not considered a meat. Bacon is a condiment. What kind of meat would you like?" So I added chicken ...just to be polite...- Ron Adams
