Playing the Field
The last cog in the Motorsports Triple Crown will begin June 17th – the 24 Hours of Le Mans. The longest standing endurance race in motorsports, this year will feature the 85th running at Le Mans. The entrant list set, cars ready to rumble and drivers and crew (devoid of sleep) ready to tackle the arduous race pulling off adrenaline and perseverance.
In addition, the 24 Hours of Le Mans holds a unique perspective in that crews run 24 straight hours on a road course. Even durance races through open courses and routes get a break. These drivers and crews run 24 hours non-stop trying to inch closer and closer to the winner’s podium.
Moreover, the race started as a response to take racecars to the road course to run continuously to test the limits of both man and machine. The fuel and machinations parlayed on the track are as much between the ears of the driver and crews as with the mechanics of the racecar.

Ron Adams, publisher of Via Corsa Magazine, got the unique chance to cover the 24 Hours of Le Mans. And let’s just say exhaustion is real for the spectators. Maybe not as real as with the drivers and crews, but its apparent, nonetheless!
From Adams’s visit to the 24 Hours of Le Mans:
As first impressions go, I wasn’t impressed as I stood there near the Dunlop Chicane on a hot and sunny Saturday morning scanning the grandstands and action on the track, I thought everything looked a lot like the Rolex Monterey Motorsports Reunion. Now, that’s not meant to be a bad comparison, whatsoever. What happens in Monterey is a world class event – it’s just this is the big spectacle of Le Mans.
Incidentally, a trip to Le Mans, for most racing enthusiasts, is a pilgrimage, a right of passage to fulfill during one’s lifetime. My first impression began to shift concurrently after seeing a pair of Jaguar E-Types roar past me…
